While Hilary and Priti have lived all over the U.S. and abroad, their favorite home was the 1922 Colonial that they lovingly (and agonizingly) restored to its former glory, albeit updated for the 21st Century, in the heart of Atlanta, GA.
Hilary believes each house has a personality and a style that evolves with each owner.
“The trick is to identify a home’s persona: its predispositions based on architectural style and previous owner’s renovations and uses as well as its ‘favorite’ hues. Then, apply those colors using the corresponding tone in accordance with the mood the current homeowner wants to evoke in each room.”
In the case of her Atlanta home, located on Ponce de Leon Avenue in the Virginia Highlands, Hilary selected a palette that matched the natural oak and hearts of pine floors (the floors throughout being the only things she planned to leave untouched in the renovation) in bright, cheery tones that invoked the vibrancy of the trendy, urban neighborhood outside the doorstep.
The interior palette was imbibed with the essence of Atlanta: the bright blues of the dawn sky as the rising sun glints off the buildings of Downtown Atlanta as viewed from the Master Lounge, cup of coffee in hand;the insipid green of the eternally vernal city where no tree can be removed if it bears a single leaf and the kudzu, ivy and wisteria that drapes itself from everything that stands still for more than an hour; the burnt orange and flax, the fiery sunsets seen from the west-facing balcony as the sun sank seemingly into the traffic-jammed avenue below.
The exterior palette was chosen as an updated Tudor, which reflects the colors of the marble, brick and paint of the landmark Baptist church located directly across the Avenue from the home: warm marble, deep brown doors with bronze gilt, and crisp, white windows.
“This home renovation was a labor of love and, while its decorations and furnishings may not reflect a common taste, I know I did the home’s legacy and future justice.” -Hilary
